THE ENLIGHTENED THINKER
Lately, the Prime Minister announced upcoming measures restricting
access to adult content for young adults. This is mainly due to the harmful
mental effects that are being currently revealed, while many countries
worldwide have already imposed restrictions and age limits.
At first glance the measures seem good, however a much deeper
overview of the reality will reveal otherwise. For a start, the X-rated
industry is not about the dubious man in a raincoat anymore, instead we are
talking of licensed Conglomerates and Corporates. Therefore they generate
employment and overall contribute to the country's economic growth.
We must understand that the capitalist system, driven by benefit
and profit, will often turn a blind eye on immoralities. What is important to
them is whether it is a profitable venture or not. In 2021 alone, the gross revenue
of Aylo, a multinational pornographic Conglomerate owned by Ethical Capital
Partners (ECP) - which is a Canadian private equity firm, was estimated to be
around $460 Million.
Hence, while we live under capitalism, there is no permanent
method of fully protecting our youths from viewing, accessing and being molded
by these obscenities. It comes to only a matter of self-control, which of
course is a must, even if it may be challenging. Altogether, grown ups and
youngsters should acknowledge how the entertainment industry was purposely
designed and used as a tool to divert.
Just as in the old days, emperors would organise gladiator combat
or chariot games in the colosseum to divert people's attention whenever they
became unpopular, which acted almost like an opiate, slumbering the mass,
occupying their minds thus pushing away any thought of rebellion against their
authority.
Similarly nowadays, the entertainment industry has blown out of
proportion, and is even institutionalized. Whether it is in the form of sports,
films, X-Films, or games, they all serve the same purpose i.e. deviating people
from their cause, while enriching the Capitalists. Many verses of the holy
Qur'an caution us against the enjoyment of the dunya.
How about the haraam enjoyment? Also, haven't we been mandated to
lower the gaze by the Prophet s.a.w? As Muslims, staying focused at all times
is a prerequisite to success in the Hereafter. A slight deviation can be
detrimental to the everlasting life that awaits us. Can we afford to consume so
much entertainment or feed our soul with obscenity?
Allah swt says in Surah Baqarah Verse 168 and 169: " ... And do not follow the footsteps of Shaytwaan, indeed he is to you a clear enemy. He (shaytwaan) only orders you to evil and immorality". Consequently, it is now clear as the day that we need to replace capitalism with the Islamic ideology to live in a healthy society, where good values are promoted and our youths are truly protected from wickedness.
